The Miss World organization is rocking the pageant world.

Julia Morley, the Miss World chairwoman, has announced that it is dropping the swimsuit segment from the competition, reports ABC News.

And Chris Wilmer, national director of Miss world America/Miss United States tells ABC: "It's not just a beauty contest, it's 'beauty with a purpose'. There didn't seem to be a purpose to have the swimsuit."

The competition lately has made a point to showcase charity work carried out by contestants.

On Dec. 14, Miss South Africa, Rolene Strauss, was crowned the 64th Miss World.

Miss United States Elizabeth Safrit takes part in the

"Miss World should be a spokesperson who can help a community," Wilmer told ABC News. "She's more of an ambassador, not a beauty queen."

Instead of focusing on taut abs and sexy swimsuit bods, Wilmer says Miss World plans to feature a beachwear round. "It'll be more of a fashion competition than a bikini show," Wilmer said.

Miss World contestants will still compete in events including dance, talent, top model gown, Beauty with a Purpose video and several interviews.

Says Wilmer, "Pageantry is an age old industry and I think with Julia getting rid of swimsuit and making it more of a lifestyle competition sends a strong message and I applaud her for it."

We reached out to the Miss America organization for comment and to see if they are considering following suit. Here's what the they said in a statement:

"The Miss America Organization is proud to promote healthy lifestyles year round and we do not have any plans to eliminate the swimwear portion of our competition. We wish Miss World well in their decision."

Are you ready for a new Miss America? USA TODAY's Ann Oldenburg offers a look at this year's 53 contestants (states and territories), who have been busy all week in Atlantic City with preliminary competitions before Sunday's Miss America 2015 pageant, airing on ABC at 9 p.m. ET.

IDEG pushes for electoral reforms

Dr Emmanuel Akwetey

The Institute for Democratic Governance Ghana (IDEG) has proposed key reforms in the country’s electoral system to prevent conflict during the 2016 general elections.

Emeritus Prof. Kwame A. Ninsin, Scholar-in-Residence at IDEG, proposed the reforms on Thursday at the Alisa HOTEL IN Accra on behalf of the group.

He presented a paper at a public dialogue on the electoral reforms process organized by IDEG and the Civic Forum Initiative (CFI) in collaboration with Gyandoh Asmah & Co., an Accra-based law firm under the theme: ‘The role of constitutional reforms in consolidating peace, stability and national cohesion.’

The dialogue was aimed at providing the options to strengthen democratic governance with respect to sustaining credible elections, peace and national development.

He proposed frameworks for political party regulations and appropriate capacity-building for policy building, among others.

“These proposals would require some form of constitutional amendment,” the academician stated.

He also suggested that the electoral reforms must be solely controlled by the ordinary citizens via their elected representatives in Parliament. He said that the parliamentary process must provide opportunity for various opinions and interests to be synthesized into a consensual document.

“Hence, Parliament should own the process from the beginning to the final act of amendment so that the essential compromises and consensus could be built,” he said.

Continuing he noted that “this is important in order to confer legitimacy on the final document.”

He emphasized the need for the reforms to be carried out with a sense of urgency before the 2016 elections.

The professor said: “Considering the fact that the political storm has been gathering momentum, especially since the 2000 elections, we should not behave like the proverbial ostrich.”

A retired lecturer of law based in the Netherlands, Prof. John Griffiths, in a presentation at the public conversation, said thorough consideration must be made before carrying out the reforms.

Participants at the forum were drawn from Parliament, the Judiciary, Ministries, Departments and Agencies, political parties, academia, civil society, professional bodies, development partners, media and the general public.

3,600 Delegates decide NDC’s fate today

NDC Colours

About 3,600 delegates of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) are expected to participate in the crucial elections today, to decide the fate of the party in the next four years.

This follows months of several hold-ups arising out of the numerous legal battles against the party by some aggrieved members, ranging from eligibility of the outgoing national officers to decisions over the suitability of some of the aspirants.

For the first time in the history of the party, 70 individuals have filed to contest 24 positions declared vacant, at the national delegates’ congress being organized today, Saturday, December 20, at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi.

Four persons are hoping to secure the chairmanship slot. These include the incumbent, Dr. Kwabena Adjei; Coordinator for National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Kofi Porturphy, former General Secretary, Alhaji Huudu Yahya as well as former Ambassador to Malaysia, Daniel Abodakpi.

Many have projected the NADMO Boss will topple the incumbent but Dr. Kwabena Adjei insists, he will pull a surprise and perhaps “end the political career” of his opponents.

It is expected that six (6) out of 15 candidates will be selected to serve as vice chairs for the NDC and these include outgoing Women’s Organiser, Jemima Anita Desoso; former Attorney General, Betty Mould-Iddrisu, former Minister for Local Government and Rural Development, Samuel Ofosu Ampofo; as well as former Education Minister, Lee Ocran.

The Ashanti Regional capital, especially the entrance to the Stadium, is awash with billboards of different forms, of the individuals contesting the various positions.

Key decisions

The National Executive Council of the party met Friday night and are expected to announce key decisions adopted for the conduct of the polls.

Myjoyonline.com has learnt, key among the decisions will be the prohibition of the candidates from addressing the delegates in turns.

This is to save some time and ensure that the congress runs smoothly without glitches.

Some analysts say the congress can either make or break the governing party because of the acrimonious manner in which some of the candidates conducted their campaigns particularly, those contesting the National Organiser position.

One of the two candidates, Deputy General Secretary, Kofi Adams and the incumbent Yaw Boateng Gyan, will carry the day.

The new leaders who would emerge victorious from Saturday’s congress would be tasked to organize primaries for the presidential and parliamentary elections for the NDC ahead of the 2016 general elections.

FBI confirms North Korea behind Sony hack

Interview

WASHINGTON - The FBI confirmed Friday that North Korea was behind the cyber attacks on Sony Pictures.

"As a result of our investigation, and in close collaboration with other U.S. Government departments and agencies, the FBI now has enough information to conclude that the North Korean government is responsible for these actions,'' a FBI statement said.

"While the need to protect sensitive sources and methods precludes us from sharing all of this information, our conclusion is based, in part, on similarities in specific lines of code, encryption algorithms, data deletion methods, and compromised networks."

"We are deeply concerned about the destructive nature of this attack on a private sector entity and the ordinary citizens who worked there,'' the FBI said in the brief statement.

"Further, North Korea's attack on SPE (Sony Pictures Entertainment) reaffirms that cyber threats pose one of the gravest national security dangers to the United States.''

The FBI said that it had "determined that the intrusion into SPE's network consisted of the deployment of destructive malware and the theft of proprietary information as well as employees' personally identifiable information and confidential communications.''

"The attacks also rendered thousands of SPE's computers inoperable, forced SPE to take its entire computer network offline, and significantly disrupted the company's business operations.''

While it has seen a rising number of cyber breaches, "the destructive nature of this attack, coupled with its coercive nature, sets it apart," the FBI said.

"North Korea's actions were intended to inflict significant harm on a U.S. business and suppress the right of American citizens to express themselves,'' the FBI said. "Such acts of intimidation fall outside the bounds of acceptable state behavior.''

In addition to the coding similarities, the FBI said it had found other evidence of North Korea's involvement, including the discovery of several Internet addresses "associated with known North Korean infrastructure communicated with IP addresses that were hard-coded into the data deletion malware used in this attack."

Also, the FBI found that tools used in the Sony attack were similar to an attack launched last March against South Korean banks and media outlets carried out by North Korea.

Conflicting messages about The Interview and its fate appeared late Thursday night. One, posted publicly, told the studio it has "suffered enough" and is free to release The Interview.

At the same time, a private message sent to some Sony executives Thursday night told them they had made a "very wise" decision when they cancelled the Seth Rogen-James Franco comedy, sources at Sony told USA TODAY on background.

The dueling messages are diametrically opposed.

The private message read, "Now we want you never let the movie released, distributed or leaked in any form of, for instance, DVD or piracy," adding "And we want everything related to the movie, including its trailers, as well as its full version down from any website hosting them immediately."

That's a very different one from the a public posting, also made late Thursday night, to Pastebin, an online file-sharing website. The hackers have been using Pastebin to release their messages for the past several weeks.

The full text of the Pastebin posting read:

This is GOP.

You have suffered through enough threats.

We lift the ban.

The Interview may release now.

But be carful.

September 11 may happen again if you don't comply with the rules.

Rule #1: no death scene of Kim Jong Un being too happy

Rule #2: do not test us again

Rule #3: if you make anything else, we will be here ready to fight

It is impossible to know if the Pastebin message is actually from the Guardians of Peace, the shadowy hacker group that claims to have infiltrated Sony's computer network and stolen millions of files.
