All we wanted was a win, says Ayew

Star man Andre Ayew says Ghana wanted to beat Togo at all cost, no matter how they achieved the result to turn the fortunes of the team around.

The Black Stars fought from behind to put away a spirited Togo team buoyed by their home fans with a 3-2 win on Wednesday.

The win sends Ghana join top of Group E alongside Uganda in the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

The Black Stars had opened their qualifying campaign on a disappointing note, drawing 1-1 at home to Uganda to a hostile home crowd.

The Ghanaian fans have been on the back of the Black Stars players for their disappointing showing at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

The win over Togo on Wednesday is therefore seen by many as the turning point of the Black Stars’ fortunes in going forward.

Ghana forward Andre Ayew says the win was all that matters to lift the cloud of pessimism over the team.

“We were not in any mood to lose any points because we didn’t want to play catch up,” the Olympique Marseille star said after the game played in Lome.

“We just did not care, all we wanted was a win, and thankfully we had it in a great way.

“Before we left for Togo, the mood in the camp was a solemn one because of the Uganda result, the fans and the injuries we had.

“But we knew that if we allowed all those things to weigh us down, the end result won’t be good.

“So we picked ourselves up and talked to each other on the need for us to forget all other things and get the win here and it paid off.”
