How is Luis Suarez already allowed to play for Barcelona?
Luis Suarez played in his first soccer game since FIFA suspended him for biting Italian defendor Giorgio Chiellini when he came on as a late substitute for Barcelona in a preseason friendly match against Mexican side Club León.
Wait. What? How is that possible?
Suarez was initially banned from all soccer activity for four months by FIFA for the incident, but in a strangely under-reported story, the Court of Arbitration for Sport last week downgraded the ban. They court ruled that Suarez would be allowed to practice and play in non-competitive friendlies, so Suarez was allowed to play on Monday.
From NBC Sports:
Suarez can continue to play in friendlies for Barcelona and Uruguay, plus train with his new team until his ban is over on Oct. 26. Only then will Suarez be allowed to play in competitive matches for club and country, but he’s taking large strides to gaining full-fitness ahead of his La Liga debut which could come against Barca’s arch-rivals Real Madrid in late October.
