Sunyani, July 31, GNA - A 14-year-old Junior High School (JHS) student has allegedly committed suicide at Penkwase, a suburb of Sunyani, because her mother seized her mobile phone.
Mr Solomon Appiah, resident at Penkwase told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Sunyani that Vivian Lamptey, threatened to take her life if her mother refused to hand over the phone to her.
He explained that her mother seized the phone because she suspected the deceased of communicating with boys.
Mr Appiah said the deceased had confided in a friend that she would commit suicide because of her mother’s action.
He said the deceased, in the presence of her mother and the friend went into a room, locked it and hanged herself with a rope.
According to Mr Appiah, the mother who was adamant did not follow the deceased into the room as she took the threat lightly.
The deceased’s father, who lived in a nearby house, arrived and was asked by the wife to advise his daughter against committing suicide over the phone.
He said the deceased’s father knocked on the door but there was no response, and therefore forced it opened.
The deceased was found hanging dead with a knife on the floor.
Mr Appiah said the deceased’s father reported the matter to the police who came for the corpse.
When GNA contacted the Sunyani Municipal Police, they confirmed the incident, and said it was being investigated.
