Five persons have died with more than five thousand residents in the Jomoro District in the Western Region rendered homeless, following the torrential rains.
Pupils there are unable to go to school; about six schools there have virtually been submerged by floods, district coordinator of National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Japheth Baidoo confirmed to Joy FM’s Super Morning Show Thursday.
Rivers in Jomoro have over flown their banks; the floods are now stagnant, he stated.
The affected schools are Maryland Preparatory School, Peace International School, Presbyterian School, Action Church school, Mount Zion Preparatory School at Ekpu, and Mizza Memorial Preparatory.
Areas that have heavily been hit include Newtown, Half Assini, Ekpu, Old and New Edobo.
NADMO has not been able to reach most of the displaced residents due to the nature of the situation, Japheth Baidoo said.
He said “emergency action” needs to be taken to arrest the situation. NADMO is currently liaising with the Regional Minister to drench the affected areas so that they can reach residents with relief items, he said.
Drenching work should hopefully be completed over the weekend, he said .
Some residents he noted, have been supplied with life jackets to aid their movements. More life jackets would be supplied, Mr. Baidoo assured.
