ECOWAS set to meet on Ebola

Chairman of ECOWAS, President John Mahama says the regional body is set to hold a meeting on the deadly virus, Ebola.

The meeting to be held under the auspices of the West African Health Organization is to discuss sustainable and practical ways of tackling the disease.

President Mahama said this when the Executive Director of the UNAIDS, Michell Sidibe paid a courtesy call on him at the Flagstaff House.

The president expressed worry over what he described as the panicky situation attending the issues relating to the Ebola virus and called on a concerted effort to resolve the situation.

He said as a result of these panic reports flights no longer go to countries affected by the virus making it difficult for voluntary health professionals to even go to those countries to assist.

President John Mahama said some adhoc measures being adopted in infected countries have the tendency of exacerbating the problem, hence the need for a regional meeting to discuss more strategic measures in resolving the crisis.

He said leadership of the sub region is committed to dealing with all of these challenges

While sympathizing with the Ebola affected countries, the UNAIDS Executive Director who is also under the Secretary General of the United Nations Michel Sidibe was also quick to draw attention to the successes chalked in the fight against HIV AIDS.

He lauded Ghana’s efforts in reduction of the pandemic but called for more including budgetary allocations for the local productions of Anti retroviral drugs

In a response the president said these have already been part of the country’s strategies. He announced that the two day ebola meeting will be held on the 26-27 of this month.

There would also be the health ministers meeting to be followed by the Heads of State of meeting on ECOWAS.
